DETROIT (WJBK) -

Monday evening, 54-year-old Charlita Knight was at her sister's apartment on Second Avenue. Now her blood smears the walls and stains the carpet after Knight was brutally murdered.

The suspect is 65-year-old John Darby, the stabbing victim's ex-boyfriend.

Knight used to live in an apartment down the hall with Darby until about three months ago. She temporarily lived with her sister after their break-up, then moved to Battle Creek a month ago to be with her new boyfriend. On Monday, she was back for a visit.

"He went to the store for her. He came back," said Tonya Woody. "I said, 'I don't want him in my...' And before I got a chance to get the words out of my mouth, he was standing there. And she was like, 'Oh, he ain't gonna do nothing to me.'"

However, she said Darby had hurt her sister before, so she was concerned.

Knight and Darby went into the other room. Woody went across the hall with her neighbor, and then heard her sister scream.

"She said, 'He's trying to kill me,'" Woody explained. "I could just see him going up and down, up and down."

"I thought he was punching her at first," she continued. "I saw the silver part to the knife going up and down."

The accused is now in custody. He uses a walker and would seem an unlikely criminal, but he has already spent time behind bars for manslaughter, assault, robbery and drugs.

"As long as they lock him up and throw away the key, I'm alright," Woody said.
