Delaware Couple To Celebrate Supreme Court Ruling

Posted: Updated:
NEW CASTLE COUNTY, Del. -

In the nation's capital today, the Supreme Court ruled that a provision of the Defense of Marriage Act that denied federal benefits to married same-sex partners is "unconstitutional."

Today's rulings do not guarantee benefits to gay couples in states that don't recognize same-sex marriage. Pennsylvania, for example, won't apply because it has a ban on the gay marriage.

But today's major developments come just a few days before another big win for marriage equality supporters in Delaware.

Same-sex couples are in the final countdown to the day they'll be able to marry.

Dan Cole says he has the best job in New Castle County government: he marries people. But until now, he couldn't marry the person he loves.

"It was a little conflicting," says Dan Cole, a Legal Aide and New Castle County Clerk of the Peace. "Because I'm very happy for them, happy to create this moment for them. But then I can't take advantage of that myself."

Because Cole is gay. But when he heard Wednesday's Supreme Court decision, "It was really hard to focus for a bit here at work. I really just wanted to jump around and scream and cry, and do all those crazy things."

Cole and his partner Joseph Daigle will be getting married this Monday, the first day the state of Delaware will allow same-sex couples to legally marry.

"It's going to be a huge game-changer for me," says Cole. "It'll be so exciting for me. It'll also be great that I know what they're feeling when I'm standing there in front of them marrying them."

And knowing that the federal government will now hold his marriage on equal footing with theirs. Cole insists the Supreme Court ruling is as monumental as any civil rights victory in American history.

"Most people go through life knowing that they have these privileges and they have these rights, whatever they may be. But suddenly having the door open to you and saying, come join the club, you're one of us, we accept you-- it's a huge deal!"
