CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

About 85 vehicles and thousands of dollars in salvaged auto parts were seized early Thursday from a South Side tow yard owner who is suspected of trafficking in stolen vehicles and auto parts.

Detectives and a crew of flat-bed tow trucks descended on the gravel Chicago Lawn neighborhood lot at 63rd and Bell Wednesday night to begin the task of removing the vehicles – some of which are believed to be stolen.

A Corvette missing some wheels and several high end SUVs were among the vehicles trucked away about 1 a.m.

The tow trucks worked into the morning hours, relocating the vehicles to a police lot where detectives will continue their investigation, police said.

As of Thursday morning, investigators confirmed five of the vehicles were in fact stolen, police said.

The owner of the tow yard, who police said was able to supply titles for only five vehicles, was arrested and taken to the Chicago Lawn district station, police said.

Stolen auto parts including engines "so new you can eat off them," new tires and catalytic converters were found in the tow yard, a police source said.

During the operation, several men, believed to be associates of the tow lot owner, could be seen carrying arm-loads of catalytic converters from the lot, which they loaded into nearby parked cars.
