Money-saving tips for landscaping your yard

Posted: Updated:

Thinking of doing a little landscaping in the yard this weekend?  If you're looking to spruce up your home without breaking the bank, we've got some great money-saving secrets you won't want to miss.

Ed Castro, who owns Ed Castro Landscaping, says you don't have to spend a fortune to have a healthy lawn.  For green grass, Castro says you need an aerator.  It promotes a healthy root system by poking a hole in the grass and creating oxygenation.  And Castro says there's no need to be intimidated by the machine's size, because its very easy to rent them at a garden center, hardware store, or big box retailer and have them deliver it to you.

Castro also suggest splitting the cost and rental time with a neighbor to make it even cheaper.  He says this is the perfect time of year to do it.

When it comes to mulch, Castro says there are lots of kinds to choose from—from pine bark to hardwood.  Some are brown and some are tan, so they can bring a different texture to your landscaping while serving the same purpose.

Castro says you should stay away from color-treated mulch, and don't use plastic in between the dirt and the mulch.  It actually blocks the transference of nutrients into the soil.

He says you should use about an inch of mulch, which is just enough to cool the roots system.  That cooling effect locks in moisture, won't dry it out, and also eliminates erosion.   In the end, it retains water while also looking great.

All life needs water, of course, and Castro says gadgets like a timer will not only save you money, but also ensure your landscaping isn't over-hydrated.  He says an inch of water a week is plenty.  You shouldn't use more than that, or you'll create some problems by the middle of the summer.

Ed says the best time to water your lawn is in the morning.  After a long rain, he says you should wait until the weather is rain-free and hot for three days consistently before you start to water again.
