Rooster On The Loose In Mt. Airy

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

There's a rooster on the run in Philadelphia.

The first sight of a wild animal lurking in her yard spooked Tracie Gardner.

"What is that? And where did it come from?" she remembers thinking.

The two legged, fowl-mouthed creature's been running rampant through her Mt. Airy neighborhood.

"Oh yeah, that's him," she points as the rooster near her yard.

He's ruffling residents' feathers with his early morning call.

"Cock! cock! cock! cock!" a neighborhood kid mimics the sound he hears every morning.

This is the tiny terror making the big squawk on the 1300 block of East Cliveden.

"I don't live on a farm and I don't expect to be awakened earlier than my alarm clock by a chicken," says Gardner.

Since June 8th, the rooster's taken up residence in the yards of Tracie Gardner and her neighbors.

When he made Tracie's hand rail his perch, she named him Foghorn, Foggy for short.

Then she called city Animal Control multiple times for help.

"They did send someone out," says Gardner. "She couldn't catch him...foghorn is kinda quick."

According to Bertha Jones, another resident, "Poor little thing I'd probably throw him some crumbs."

Residents are not a fan of free range food; they're just hoping Foggy finds a new place to roost.

Though he's helped Tracie with her time management.

"I'm at work extra early; I get up, make breakfast, full breakfast because I have time," says Gardner, "With full stomach too."

City Animal Control says they'll make every effort to come back and catch the rooster. Unfortunately they have other animal issues that take priority.

They say chickens are illegal in the city and it's likely someone bought the rooster and released it when it got older and started cockadoodling.
