When Jacques Hurtado heard the Defense of Marriage Act had been overturned by the Supreme Court, he started to cry…. Immediately, he called his significant other, Ismael Ramirez, and asked him to marry him
"what do you mean?" answered the flabbergasted Ismael, "of course I'll marry you" The exchange has probably taken place between hundreds of gay and lesbian couples, now that California will, again, legalize their unions.
But there is another benefit, and it could affect as many as 36 thousand couples!
With the same federal benefits and rights as straight married couples, GLBT American citizens and green card holders will be able to submit petitions to US Immigration for an international spouse to receive a green card.
What's more, a green card holder who has been married to an American for at least three years, and has lived in the US, CAN apply for naturalization…
"It will change our lives…" says Jacques. We will get married, and I can ask to sponsor him, as my husband.
"I can go to work without being afraid" explains Jacques…."We can visit our families in Mexico, together!" adds Ismael.
"We can adopt children" they go on, like children opening a much hoped for Christmas gift, that has finally arrived.
