PHOENIX -

Inmates in Tent City are used to feeling the heat, but as temperatures near 120 degrees, Sheriff Joe Arpaio's heart has melted ever so slightly for Maricopa County's criminals.

Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies say Arpaio has ordered ice cream and ice water-soaked  towels for the men and women of Tent City.

Arpaio will be at the infamous outdoor jail complex himself to kick-off what he's calling the "cold as ice" experience.

FOX 10's Cory McCloskey forecasts a high of 119 degrees in the Phoenix area Friday.

According to deputies, the temperature inside a tent in the yard of Tent City Thursday afternoon was 137 degrees.

"Temperatures have always been on the sizzling side in Tent City during the summer months. But, there has never been an inmate that has suffered a serious health problem related to the heat in the tents. I don't want that perfect record spoiled this year," said Arpaio.

Arpaio created Tent City after he took office in 1993.
