Going Full Throttle

Posted: Updated:
Los Angeles, CA -

If you haven't been to Six Flags Magic Mountain in a few years or so, you've missed out on a few new rides that are quite impressive. The latest engineering wonder is aptly named Full Throttle. I was supposed to ride the park's latest addition a week ago but a bureaucratic hiccup in Sacramento that would have allowed me to test the roller coaster caused me to miss out. That missed opportunity, as it were, just made me all the more eager to try out Magic Mountain's most recent scream machine. And I must say it was well worth the wait.

Now at the risk of being a spoiler here, I will describe in hair-raising detail what you will experience if you ever dare to hop aboard Full Throttle. Don't worry, the ride is much more intense than anything I could write here. First of all, it is billed as the world's tallest, fastest loop roller coaster. The ride is a relatively short but terror-filled 54 seconds, during which you are launched at 70mph out of the station and into a 160 foot gravity-defying loop. But that's just the beginning. When you first step into the car, the first thing you notice is the glaring absence of the over the shoulder harness which is all but obligatory on any ride that goes upside down. All you get is an old fashioned lap bar--no harness and no seat belt. Immediately you wonder how in the world you're going to survive that daunting loop staring you in the face?

After being launched from the station and going through the loop and dangling upside down for what seems like an eternity, you race through a stretch of twisted track just in case you're not quite disoriented enough and into a tunnel, where you come to a rapid, screeching halt. After going in reverse, you then speed back toward the loop, this time going over the top of it causing you to be catapulted several inches out of your seat--something coaster enthusiasts call "air time." It is not only very scary, it's the one thing for which diehard coaster riders live and breathe.

Full Throttle is Magic Mountain's 18th coaster making it the park with more scream machines than any other on the planet. If Six Flags MM is on your list of places to visit this summer, Full Throttle is a must do! Be sure to check out the video of me on the ride here!
