3-alarm Bronzeville blaze extinguished

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A three-alarm blaze that destroyed multiple Bronzeville businesses Tuesday morning has been extinguished.

The fire was officially struck out about 3:55 a.m., Fire Media Affairs spokesperson Will Knight said.

The blaze destroyed three businesses--a boarded-up barbershop, a barbecue restaurant and a wireless phone store--in the 300 block of East Pershing Road, according to Knight.

"Everything has water or smoke damage inside," Knight said.

Firefighters were first called to the commercial fire about 11 p.m., after people in a restaurant smelled smoke, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

Less than an hour later, flames could be seen shooting skyward as firefighters battled the blaze in the 300 block of East Pershing Road, according to fire officials.

At some point, the roof of the 75 feet by 125 feet building collapsed.

Just before 2 a.m. officials announced the two-alarm fire was under control, but just 30 minutes later the fire was upgraded to a three-alarm fire, according to the fire department.

About 175 firefighters and paramedics responded to the scene, although nobody was seriously injured in the fire.

Crews are expected to remain at the scene for cleanup into the early morning rush hour, according to fire department officials.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
