Detroit's Brightmoor neighborhood site of cleanup

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

Detroit's Brightmoor neighborhood is the site of a major cleanup project spearheaded by the nonprofit Detroit Blight Authority.

The cleanup is targeting a 14-block area that encompasses over 400 residential lots and about 70 vacant structures in an area bounded by West Outer Drive, Lyndon and Trinity streets.

Work crews arrived in Brightmoor last month and began collecting rubbish and clearing brush. The Blight Authority says it would like to continue with the $500,000 project beyond cleanup, and demolish some structures in future phases.

The area for years has been used for illegal dumping. So far, officials say they've already collected more than 200 tires and 70,000 pounds of debris, trash and dead forestry.

"What we're focused on is removing that psychological burden and getting rid of this toxic stress and returning it to an area where the community can thrive," says Detroit Blight Authority Chairman Bill Pulte.

The Brightmoor project is the second for the Blight Authority. It initially worked in a 10-block area across from a school near the city's Eastern Market area. The group's chairman is Bill Pulte, a grandson of the founder of homebuilder PulteGroup Inc.
