The Talker: 59 percent of Americans do work on vacation

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

July is a big vacation month, but for a lot of people, vacations are not what they used to be.

Surveys show we take our jobs with us on vacation and you can thank mobile technology for that.

One survey found 59 percent of Americans do work when they're on vacation. They check email, take phone calls, and perform other work-related tasks.

36 percent of people say they do work every day while they're on vacation and it does not seem exactly voluntary. In another survey, 54 percent of workers said their bosses expect them to do work during vacations.

There's conflicting information about how people feel about doing work when they're away from work. One survey found 64 percent of people said they prefer to check work email while they're away because they feel less behind when they return to the office.

But other surveys found that two-thirds of families get upset a loved one works on vacation and one-third of people hide their email-checking from family. 51 percent of people said they'd rather get a root canal than do work during a vacation.

One expert warned employers need to be careful about expecting employees to work too much because it can lead to resentment and the loss of good employees.

One neuro-biologist said a lot of keep doing work because it's a habit. He says it's a tough habit to break -- especially when we bring the phone or laptop with us on vacation. When it's there, we can't help but use it.
