Celebrations For July 4th Holiday Begin In Philly

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Fireworks lit up the night sky Tuesday over Penn's Landing in the City of Independence.

It was a special moment for thousands of people, including many who come to visit often, like Patricia Curry and her family.

"We are having a wonderful time!" she says. "I'm looking up at the sky. All of the color…it's just beautiful."

She says this fireworks show is a great time for her family to reunite and make up for lost time.

"We come to Penn's Landing about every other year. This is our place now, near the water!" says Curry. "The music and the fireworks. I haven't seen fireworks in about two years so I'm excited."

The fireworks went on despite several bands of rain moving through.

And the rain didn't stop the Philadelphia Orchestra from rocking the house, although they got a bit of a late start.

"Weather could be a little nicer, but seeing a free concert is always good," said one member of the audience.

"Love classical music, so she had the great idea of bringing us here tonight," said Nawar Shreiba, as he pointed to his friend, Samira Ghassemi.

"Despite the weather, it's amazing to see all these people kind of conger about and make light of the situation and still enjoy some great music," Ghassemi added.

It's an early moment in a week of celebrations, but one that has a personal meaning to everyone here.

Asked what the holiday means to her, Curry said, "It means to get together, bring peace and love."

"Becoming one force together and unifying us as our true values about independence. Basically it is everything that really defines us today," said Shreiba.
