4th of July Gadget Roundup

Posted: Updated:

4th of July is upon us and with that, road trips, tri-tip, parties and lazy time at the shoreline! Well, we nerds here in the tech lab at myfoxla.com want to help you make sure you're well prepared, electronically, for successful holiday merrymaking. To that end, our Tech Ninja, Tshaka Armstrong, has some great gear for your long weekend Fourth festivities.

Razer Edge Pro Gaming Tablet- Razer has a reputation for being one of the peripheral innovators in the gaming industry with a large portfolio of products. Here are the specs:
- 128GB & 256GB versions available.
- Intel Core i7 Dual core w/ Hyper Threading Base 1.9GHz / Turbo 3.0GHz
- 8GB DDR3 (2x4GB 1600MHz)
- Intel HD4000 (DX11) NVIDIA GT 640M LE (2GB DDR3, Optimus Technology)
- 10.1" (IPS, 1366x768) Multi-touch HD display
- Windows 8
- Intel WLAN (802.11b/g/n + BT4)
- Stereo speakers Codec supports 7.1 (via HDMI through optional Docking Station)
- HD Webcam (front-facing, 2MP)
- Array microphones
- Dolby Home Theater v4
- USB 3.0 x1 (green, SuperSpeed)
- Audio jack (3.5mm, 4-pole, stereo out / mic in)
- Approximate Size: 278.5 mm x 178.85 mm x 19.5 mm / 10.9" x 7" x .80"
- Approximate Weight: 962g / 2.1Lbs

Tshaka's takeaway: Spec-wise, a great tablet which also happens to be a beast of a touchscreen computer and PC gaming rig. Though the Edge Pro does have great vents, the heat emanating from the device is noticeable (though, not uncomfortable) and as awesome as this device is, it will have to improve in the battery life and price point departments if it is to see wider adoption, though, being aimed squarely at PC gamers the niche market may be the goal. Bear in mind as well that you can plug in to a wall with the included charger or pick up an extended battery which will add an additional 2 hours of gameplay. You can pick one up through Razer's online store.

Jackery Bar- Very small external battery that is perfect for taking on flights and long road trips where you may not have access to power to plug in to. The specs:
- High Capacity, 5600mAh rechargeable power capacity with 2.1A output
- Aluminum case
- Manufacturer claims 500+ recharge cycles over the life of the battery
- Built-in flashlight works by pressing the power button twice
- 3 LED status of charge indicators to indicate the charging and discharging process.
Pick one up on Amazon.com.

Belkin Thunderstorm Handheld Home Theater- It's a cover, it's a stand, it's a front-firing stereo speaker system... it's pretty darn awesome! One of the Tech Ninja's pet peeves are the awkward positioning of speakers on tablets. No one sits behind a tablet and watches the movie so why do most speakers fire behind that tablet, or downward? Belkin set out to solve this issue with the Thunderstorm. It's a straight forward deal here... take your second or third generation iPad and lock it into the stand by clicking the docking port attachment into place and play your movies, music and games with sound how it should be. You can pick one up at Belkin.com and at brick and mortars like Best Buy but expect a premium price tag to go with that premium sound at $199.99.

Belkin NFC Enabled HD Bluetooth Music Receiver- Simple... it's a little puck which allows you to use your phone or tablet to connect, wirelessly, to your home theater system or stereo. With the app that is available for any Android device running OS 4.0 or 4.0.1 from the Google Play store (sorry iPad/iPhone, you're not NFC enabled) you can connect to the puck with a simple tap, or connect via bluetooth for all other devices which aren't NFC enabled. You can check that one out here.
