ATLANTA -

Despite some delays and the threat of heavy rain, fireworks lit up the Atlanta sky on Thursday.

Folks anxious for some Fourth of July fun braved the wet weather at Lenox Square for one of the Southeast's largest displays.

The event started with a heavy dousing, but that didn't dampen the spirits of diehards, some who sought shelter under umbrellas and tents.

Although an early deluge delayed the opening act on the entertainment stage, a variety of musical acts got the show underway later in the night.

While the crowd was thinned by the rain, many said they had come from communities that had cancelled or postponed their fireworks' shows.

"We came from Carrollton because every fireworks, all out in the area there -- Villa Rica, Carrolton, Franklin and all those -- have been cancelled because of the weather," said Ronnie Lee.

More than 5,000 fireworks were used in the 16-minute show. An apparent technical glitch midway caused about a delay for about 15 minutes, but the show concluded just after 10 p.m.
