Despite Oppressive Heat, People Out All Around Philadelphia

Posted: Updated:

"It's like very sticky, very humid and hot," that's how people described the weather Saturday.

The obvious place to be if you couldn't be in the air conditioning was in the water. A city pool on Aramingo Avenue was packed with adults and kids trying to beat the heat.

"It's super hot and I have seizures so I need to be somewhere cool," said one teen.

You would expect getting wet to be the only reason people would want to be outside on a scorching hot day but not so. Kelly Drive was busy too.

"It really is hot but I don't care. I love roller blading and I love being outside," said Deborah Butler who fought the heat and in her case, fitness won. Tim Hitchens lost the battle though.

"It's just too hot to keep going," he said. He's usually a dedicated runner.

"I normally come out for about 2 or 3 hours. Today I lasted an hour and a half. I've been walking a little so a little sub par for myself," said Tim.

A grandmother and grandson duo raked in some cash on the Drive. The 16 year old said selling $1 bottles of water in the heat is a good way to keep him from getting into trouble since he hasn't landed a summer job.

And just when we thought we wouldn't find anyone else out if they didn't have to be, we found Bill Bowen and Davy Harwi. They were out in the blazing sun tending to their harvest at the Spring Gardens community garden.

"As soon as we're done we're going to go over in the grass and lay down and die," joked Bowen.
