Police ID man shot by officer after allegedly threatening father

Updated:
PHOENIX -

Phoenix police say one of their officers shot and killed a 34-year-old man who was threatening to kill his father on Saturday night.

When officers arrived at an apartment near Roosevelt and 7th Streets, police say Todd Allan Ferguson came out with two butcher knives.

Police say Ferguson told the officer, who had started backing away, to kill him. The officer told him to stop, but he continued to walk toward the officers outside of the apartment, again telling him to kill him.

It was when Ferguson got within several feet of the officer that he fired at him.

Ferguson died at the scene. The officer wasn't injured.

During the investigation, police say they learned Ferguson had been drinking when he threatened to kill his dad, who he was staying with.

The officer, who has been with the Phoenix Police Department for six years, will be placed on leave during further investigation. This is standard procedure.
