NJ Transit rolling out longer light rail car

Posted: Updated:

HOBOKEN, N.J. (AP) -- NJ Transit has unveiled a longer car on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail system.

The stretch car is 37 feet longer and carries 102 passengers instead of 68.

Deputy general manager of light rail operations John Squitieri tells The Jersey Journal the longer car will rotate through the light rail system's three lines over the next six months. After that, NJ Transit expects to deploy 26 of the new stretch cars, which would represent half the light rail's fleet.

The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail system serves approximately 47,000 riders daily between Bayonne and North Bergen.
