3 children struck by SUV

Posted: Updated:

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -- Three children were struck by an SUV in New Haven after witnesses say they ran onto a busy street toward their father's car.

Police say a 5-year-old girl, her 12-year-old sister and their brother were struck Monday afternoon on Ella Grasso Boulevard. Officials say the girls were taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, while their brother was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Authorities say the SUV driver tried to avoid hitting the children. Police are investigating whether charges are warranted.

Witnesses say the children's father was in a car parked on the street when the 5-year-old girl apparently became excited to see him and ran toward him. They say the older girl ran after her sister.

Police haven't released the names of the children and driver.
