Growing Our Economy: LA's Best In Business

Posted: Updated:
Los Angeles, CA -

We begin a new segment titled "Growing Our Economy." It's a look at what local business leaders are seeing and saying about jobs.

Last month I spent time with some of LA's best in business at the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards (EOY).

Among those there, the C.E.O. of the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, the founders of tech companies and Internet, and families in business like the An family who own Crustacean Restaurant in Beverly Hills.

I wanted to know what worked, what didn't, how they succeed and how the survive in a down economy. Each of the honored businesses increased their work force by 20-percent within the year creating a total of 10-thousand jobs. I asked Brian Ring, EOY Program Director about the message being sent.

"I've always said its (the California economy) cautiously optimistic and we've seen a good turnaround this year" he said. Where is he seeing growth?  In technology and service. LA is a "hotbed" for technology he stated.

These companies are good news for college and high school graduates. They're looking for talent. Anywhere from the barista to the businessman to the inventor to the engineer. The CEO of The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf told me of baristas who moved up to Vice President in the company.

Ring held up a glass of wine to toast the 2013 Entrepreneur of the Year Award finalists. He acknowledged many of these companies have struggled to get where they are today. The An family for example fled Vietnam with no money and now in So-Cal have three trendy and popular restaurants.(Crustacean in Beverly Hills, Tiato in Santa Monica, and Anqi in Orange County)

Bottom line, many Angeleno's are still hurting from a tough economy. These companies are offering hope for a brighter future, more importantly keep and creating jobs.

Officials say a 16-year-old boy is "lucky to be alive" and unharmed after flying from California to Hawaii stowed away in a plane's wheel well, surviving cold temperatures at 38,000 feet and a lack of oxygen. "Doesn't even remember the flight," FBI spokesman Tom Simon in Honolulu told The Associated Press on Sunday night. "It's amazing he survived that."
