3 killed in multi-vehicle crash on Hwy. 365 in Gainesville

GAINESVILLE, Ga. -

Three people were killed in a four-vehicle accident on Georgia Highway 365 in Gainesville early Friday.

Six people were also injured in the wreck that left two cars pinned beneath a tractor-trailer.

The incident happened at 1 a.m. Friday and involved four vehicles: a tractor-trailer, Ford Escape, pick-up truck and Jeep, FOX 5 Atlanta's Marc Teichner reports.

Police said their initial investigation showed that he wreck may have started when a pickup truck turned left into the path of a northbound tractor-trailer.

The crash killed the driver and a passenger in the pickup. Another person died in the chain-reaction pileup.

Northeast Georgia Medical Center admitted one patient in satisfactory condition. Doctors treated and released five others.

Gregory Stephens said that the fatalities included his cousin 36-year-old Raymond McGowan.

Northbound lanes of Highway 365 near the accident site remained closed to traffic for almost nine hours.

One of the heftiest tasks in clearing the road was uprighting the overturned tractor-trailer, which required unloading part of its cargo of frozen chicken products.

The crash happened at a busy highway intersection. Residents said the traffic signal there was installed in recent months.

Gainesville resident Jenne Griffin said that she is concerned about the crossroads. She believes that more caution lights are needed.

"Because people are not paying attention. Period. End of discussion," said Griffin.

Georgia Highway 365, near Howard Road, in Gainesville reopened to traffic just before 10 a.m.
