Remembering Cory Monteith of 'Glee'

Posted: Updated:

Our Julie Chang takes a moment to remember Cory Monteith. The Glee Star died over the weekend at the age of 31.

This photo with Cory was taken in 2010, but I met Cory years before...about a year before he became famous. Before Glee hit the airwaves, the folks at Fox wanted to drum up some grassroots fan base by having the cast do a mall tour across the country. I moderated the mall stop in New Jersey...and got to hang with the cast all day long.

Cory was clearly being positioned as the heartthrob of the bunch. I think two girls proposed marriage during the mall event. But he was coy and modest about all the attention. He was so grounded. Then years went by. Cory became a household name. By the 12th of so interview I did with Cory...I expected to see a change. Fame usually changes people. I never got that from him. He stayed warm, friendly, and appreciative.

He shared his story of being a troubled teen including being in and out of different schools, dropping out, addiction...he was so candid about it all because I think he wanted his story to keep others from falling into the same temptations. I feel blessed that our paths crossed...and my condolences to his family, dear friends, and all the devout Gleeks out there.
