Term Limits

Gridlock in Washington DC is as predictable as Southern California weather. Congress failed to deal with the sequester. They're still wrangling over entitlement reforms. They appear unable to simplify the tax code.  And wouldn't deal with the Student Loan Crisis.

And it should be no surprise, most people have very little confidence in Congress at all.

A new Gallup Poll from June 2013, say 8 out of 10 Americans gave Congress the thumbs down on doing its job.

So what needs to be done? One answer could be term limits. The theory is, with term limits in place, members of Congress will be more responsible toward their constituents because soon, they'll be joining their ranks.

If they are not allowed to become so entrenched in office, maybe they will be more open minded and work towards solutions instead of worrying about re-election.

Too often, we re-elect incumbents based exclusively on name recognition and not because of a proven and effective record.

Even the founding fathers thought term limits were a good idea.

Let's look at some of California's lifers in office:

  • Senator Dianne Feinstein: 20 plus years and counting.
  • Senator Barbara Boxer: 20 plus years and counting.
  • Congressman Henry Waxman: 38 years.
  • Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi: 20 years.

Outside of California it's just as bad if not worse. Congressman John Dingell of Michigan: 57 years.

  • Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah: 36 years.
  • Senator John McCain of Arizona: 27 years.
  • The President can only serve two terms.
  • The Governor of California can only serve two terms.
  • The Mayor of Los Angeles can only serve two terms.

The point is: I think term limits could provide a way to break Washington gridlock and start to get to both parties working together.

It can't be any worse than what is happening back there right now.

Something to think about.

Thanks for listening.
