Stamford beaches closed because of sewage

Two beaches in Stamford, Conn., are empty because health officials are concerned that sewage is leaking into the water. Cummings and West Beaches are closed until further notice, officials said.

In a statement, the city's Health Department said that the city's Water Pollution Control Authority responded Wednesday morning to a call about the odor of sewage near Cummings Beach and found what appeared to be untreated sewage in Cummings Pond on Soundview Avenue.

Sources told Fox 5 that a backed-up drainage pipe poured raw sewage into the water.

Some sunbathers braved the scorching shore just to catch the rays, but lifeguards remained posted in some spots to make sure no one went in the water.
