Conyers hard hit by storms, trees down

Posted: Updated:
CONYERS, Ga. -

Conyers took a beating from Wednesday's night round of severe storms.

Most of the damaged was confined to Conyers' Olde Town district.

Pounding winds and rain tore trees down onto houses. They also blew heavy debris onto roads. The Pointe tavern, located on Railroad Street, lost its roof to gusting winds. Bit and pieces were scattered upon nearby railroad tracks.

Across Main Street, a very large oak tree that snapped under the pressure of the severe weather just missed crashing down onto an assisted living facility.

Candy Murphy was working at the Las Flores restaurant when the oak fell just after 7 p.m. She stepped outside to take a look.

"I screamed and ran inside.  It brought me back into reality and made me realize what am I doing at the door. I need to get back inside," Murphy said.

Emergency personnel worked to clear away downed trees and power lines. Minor flooding due to excessive rain was also an issue.

Police did not report any injuries as of Wednesday night.

Conyers is located about 30 miles southeast of Atlanta.
