Effort in Brightmoor is a shining example of what to do in Detroit

My recent editorial asking for your ideas on how to redefine Detroit resulted in some very good, specific feedback.

But I believe the recent blitz to reduce the blight right here in the Brightmoor neighborhood is a shining example of a grassroots effort that is working to improve the quality of life for it's residents.

In truth, it's an opportunity to redefine the neighborhood.

Brightmoor had become the city's epicenter of illegal dumping.

People from all over came here to dump tires, furniture and plain old garbage.

Overgrown brush and dilapidated structures made the dumping all too easy.

Enter the Detroit Blight Authority, a non- profit organization headed by Bill Pulte.

Their efforts netted 70 -thousand pounds of trash and hundreds of tires.

They cut down overgrown brush, dead trees and their work is already making a huge difference.

Their goal is to create a blight free zone in the 14 block area between West Outer Drive and Lyndon.

It's vital that the blight authority and other community blight reduction groups expand their efforts to other communities.

The fact is they can't do it without financial support from both government and private sources.

In my mind it makes perfect sense to use the unspent dollars from the federal hardest hit fund originally designed to assist underwater home owners.

Bill Pulte put it perfectly when he said, "this is a massive problem that will require funding from many sources."

We need to figure out how we all can support this worthwhile effort.

I'd like to hear from you. Please add your thoughts in the comment section below.
