Mesa woman celebrates 100 years young

Posted: Updated:
MESA, Ariz. -

There are birthdays, and there are milestone birthdays. 16 and 18 are big ones. So are 21 and 40. Then there's the big 100, handled with style and grace by one special lady we met today in Mesa.

When 100 is the number, there's not much to do except to roll with it like Evelyn Hawkins.

"One hundred years old, can you imagine anybody being that old and still moving around?"

Evelyn told us she feels about 50.

Friends and family gathered to celebrate the milestone at Apache Wells Community Church in Mesa.

There were root beer floats and lots of cake and birthday gifts.

Evelyn says she loves her church, and loves having her friends and family around. She's also an avid bridge player. And she loves to get moving!

"Do a lot of dancing in exercise class," she says.

A gathering of loved ones to celebrate a life well lived and well loved.

"Oh I can't believe it!"

No doubt a sense of humor has helped in her first 100 years as well.

Evelyn golfed until age 96. She has a true passion for the sport.
