When Work Gets Personal

Posted: Updated:

Let's be honest. We've all done it at one time or another to some degree or another. If you have NEVER spent time at work doing something of a personal nature that had nothing whatsoever to do with your job, feel free to cast the first stone.

However, apparently some people are starting to spend more time on personal stuff than they are on work, while they're on the job. Three out of ten employees actually admit spending a majority of their time while at work on non work-related tasks.

That's almost a third!

A recent survey finds, overall, the average worker spends one hour a day at work doing something other than what they're paid to do. Here is a list of the top ten things people do during work hours:

1. online banking
2. check the weather
3. check personal emails
4. read news sites
5. research holidays
6. pay bills
7. browse clothes online
8. check social networks
9. call friends
10. online clothes shopping

And there's more. The survey indicates 38% say they do personal stuff during quiet spells at work. Twenty-two percent say they do it because they don't have enough time in the evenings to take care of personal things. And 20% say they engage in activities unrelated to work because they are bored with their jobs.

Finally, almost a fifth of employees have missed a deadline or failed to finish a project simply because they were too busy doing things that have nothing to do with their work. The numbers seem to indicate more people are taking their work personally these days, just not necessarily in a good way.

Officials say a 16-year-old boy is "lucky to be alive" and unharmed after flying from California to Hawaii stowed away in a plane's wheel well, surviving cold temperatures at 38,000 feet and a lack of oxygen. "Doesn't even remember the flight," FBI spokesman Tom Simon in Honolulu told The Associated Press on Sunday night. "It's amazing he survived that."
