PHOENIX (AP) - A former Arizona House staffer accused of stealing more than $130,000 from a legislative candidate's campaign account has been convicted of wire fraud.

Prosecutors said Wednesday that a federal jury found 49-year-old John Rowland Mills guilty on nine counts. His sentencing is set for Oct. 8.

Mills was a policy analyst who worked for majority House Republicans before he resigned in May 2012.

Evidence at trial showed Mills embezzled about $133,000 from House Speaker Jim Weiers' re-election campaign account by forging his signature on checks from December 2006 through January 2009.

Mills was accused of using the money for mortgage payments and other personal living expenses and to make investments.

Prosecutors say Mills returned the money before it was needed in the 2008 election in an attempt to avoid detection.
