More than a dozen hurt after porch collapses at Tinley Park party

TINLEY PARK, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

More than a dozen people were injured Saturday night when a deck collapsed during a birthday party at a home in suburban Tinley Park, an official in the southwest suburb said.

Neighbors say the homeowner was getting ready to serve the birthday cake about 9:15 p.m. when the deck, holding about 30 adults and children, gave way.

Natalie Garcia, whose yard backs up to the home, was watching TV with her children when she heard a series of loud pops and then screams. "I thought maybe it was firecrackers," she said.

But when she looked out her back window and saw that the deck on her neighbor's home had collapsed, she called 911.

"People were screaming and trying to get debris off the people on the ground," she said.

Tinley Park Mayor Ed Zabrocki said 13 to 14 were injured and that the village went into disaster mode, alerting surrounding towns, which sent emergency personnel.

"The building department will take a look at what might have caused this," Zabrocki said. But if the deck was original to the house, it could be more than 30 years old, he added.

"The homes in that area were built between 1965 and 1968," he said.

The injured were taken to area hospitals, but Zabrocki said he thought none of the injuries were life threatening.

The gray, wooden deck, about 8 feet off the ground, had just been painted the day before, Garcia said. "We've lived here for five years and this was the first party I can remember them having."
