Bloomberg wants NYC to recycling everything

Posted: Updated:

Mayor Mike Bloomberg believes more and more New Yorkers will begin recycling. The city has launched an ad campaign to encourage New Yorkers to recycle everything.

"The 'Recycle Everything' ad campaign and the expansion of our organic food waste recycling program shows how far New York has come in managing the 11,000 tons of waste generated every day," Bloomberg said. "Together, these initiatives will help us double our recycling rate by 2017 and reduce the amount of trash sent to landfills."

The city is also expanding its food waste recycling pilot program. Right now it is in Morningside Gardens. Neighborhoods in Brooklyn and the Bronx will join in September. Staten and Queens follow in the spring.

The mayor says these recycling efforts will save about $60 million a year in taxpayer money because recycling is cheaper than shipping garbage to landfills.
