ATLANTA -

An Atlanta City Council committee voted on Tuesday to temporarily allow street vendors to get back to work.

The vendors haven't been allowed to sell their merchandise after Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed refused to renew permits at the beginning of the year. The mayor's decision followed a judge's ruling that disallowed a city decision to place all vendors under one company.

The mayor said that he's not against street vending, but said that it had gotten out of hand. He said his office was getting complaints from the business community about unsightly vending displays. Reed wants to create a new program with standards for the vendors.

It is expected that the full City Council will approve the committee's ruling, which would allow the vendors to return to the streets while the city comes up with a new vending program, FOX 5's Morse Diggs reports.
