Brookhaven launches police department

BROOKHAVEN, Ga. -

The city of Brookhaven has officially launched its new police department. They'll take over patrols from DeKalb County.

A formal ceremony was held on Wednesday morning at Town Brookhaven, along with the new department's first-ever roll call.

The new force was created in a little over three months. The city received 1,200 applicants. They parried that down to 156 interviews and chose the 54 officers, who were sworn in by the mayor on July 15.

Lt. Brian Gurley said they trained hard to get down to three minute response times for each 911 emergency call.

Brookhaven will operate the new police department out of the municipal court building on Buford Highway for now.  They are in negotiations for a bigger standalone command center.
