UAW to throw its support behind Napoleon's mayoral campaign

Posted: Updated:

Just days before Detroit's primary election, Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon is picking up a big endorsement in his bid to become the city's next mayor.

On Friday morning, the United Auto Workers will throw its support behind Napoleon's campaign. Union leaders praise his record in law enforcement and cutting crime at a time when he had to deal with budget cuts.

The union will make an official announcement at a news conference at 11 a.m.

"Benny Napoleon has stood with working people time after time," said UAW President Bob King. "He has stood up for workers and fought for their right to collective bargaining. We need a mayor in Detroit who cares about the working and retired people in this city, especially as Detroit goes through restructuring."

One of Napoleon's opponents, Mike Duggan, has already picked up endorsements from the EMS union and the Detroit Free Press.

Detroit's primary election will be held on Tuesday, August 6.
