4 suspects in murder of Villa Rica jewelry store owner appear in court

Posted: Updated:

Four of the five suspects in the murder of a Villa Rica jewelry store owner had a preliminary hearing in a Carroll County courtroom on Friday.

Judge Alton Johnson found enough evidence to continue the charges against all four, including a juvenile.

Raphael Rucker, 23, didn't have a court-appointed attorney at the time, so his hearing has been rescheduled for Sept. 6.

The four are accused in the murder of 50-year-old Mitch Mobley, a longtime fixture in the business community of Villa Rica.

Friends and family are still devastated by the loss of Mobley.

"Of course the family is destroyed right now. But the community, we are scared. We come here to work. We don't know if we're coming back home," said Ururahy Rodrigues, a friend of Mobley.

Rodrigues was there when police say the suspects walked into Mobley's jewelry store and began smashing cases. He called police after he heard gunfire.

A surveillance camera from Rodrigues' gym captured the suspects running from the murder scene. He wants justice for the man he calls a friend, mentor and father figure.

"I looked to him like wow, man. This looks like my dad. It looks like, you know, one person who was really inspirational because he had so many businesses before," said Rodrigues.

Rodrigues doesn't understand why they were on the street in the first place.

"These guys had more than 30 crimes," he said.

Rodrigues says he'd like to establish an afterschool program for young people so they won't be drawn to the street. He also wants to build a track for them to run and train on in memory of Mitch Mobley.
