Superstorm Sandy

Jersey Shore businesses finding ways to stay open

Posted: Updated:
NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

A number of businesses along the Jersey coastline are trying to be stronger than the storm. But with a rainy June and slow July, they've been struggling to get fully back up and running since Superstorm Sandy struck some 9 months ago.

One of those businesses is the Mad Hatter Bar and Restaurant, an establishment that has been a fixture for decades in the ocean town of Sea Bright.

Superstorm Sandy knocked out the main portion of the building, flooding it with several feet of water. The owners say they had to think of some other way to serve their customers for the summer, so they opened a mobile kitchen and a makeshift tiki bar in the back.

Jack Siggelkow has been coming to the Mad Hatter for 30 years. He and his buddies from out of town came here came here to check out the Jersey coast post-Sandy

The owner of the Mad Hatter hopes to have the entire restaurant reopened by spring 2014.

Basil farm ready to switch to marijuana

Basil plants grow on a New Jersey farm, but the facility could be turned into a five-acre medical marijuana greenhouse with only 48 hours' notice. The hoses from the state-of-the-art Dutch hydroponic system are watering flowers now, but with a few minor adjustments could just as easily grow marijuana plants for medicinal cannabis. The only reason it's not happening now is because the company is publicly traded and subject to federal law.
