Coweta Co. authorities: Man impersonating federal agent

Posted: Updated:
COWETA COUNTY, Ga. -

Police are searching for a man they say impersonating law enforcement to get into a local woman's home.

The woman, who asked not to be identified, said the man rang the doorbell at her Sharpsburg home on Tuesday night.

"I asked him who he was. He says, "I'm an INS officer. This is official government work. Please open the door,'" said the woman.

After the woman let him in, she says the man showed her a gold badge with "INS" on it. She said that he asked for her 17-year-old son by name.

"At that point in time, I told him that my son is a juvenile," she said.

A few minutes into the conversation, her son took a cell phone picture of the man. who identified himself as Robert Sturgess. The homeowner says he had a British accent and crooked teeth.

She said he was a smooth talker who said he was on a secret mission in search of 10 individuals harboring illegal immigrants.

"That he was working on special case under the Department of Homeland Security, that it was top secret," said the woman.

The man quickly left when the woman pressed him for more details. She said that he claimed he went to the wrong house and that another person by her son's name was elsewhere. Her son recorded him leaving with someone else driving a white car, perhaps a Pontiac Grand Prix.

The woman says after he left, she realized the agency he was representing doesn't exist anymore. INS was absorbed into Homeland Security a decade ago.

The woman says the man never demanded anything.

The Coweta County Sheriff's Office wants the story public because they suspect the imposter is trying to scam people who may be in the country illegally.

Anyone who has information on the man is asked to call the Coweta County Sheriff's Office at 770-253-1502.
