Jeff Kurr & Brandon McMillan: Healthy Respect For The Sharks

"Animals are unpredictable and that's exactly what happens in this show". Most people swim away from sharks but Jeff Kurr and Brandon McMillan actually swim towards them! They're part of the Discovery Channel's popular "Shark Week"...which returned Sunday night for it's 26th year.

Jeff and Brandon talked to Tony and Maria about the danger of getting up close and personal with the animals along with the rewards. Jeff says the key to staying safe is simple: don't be reckless just because the cameras are rolling. "You have to read each shark because they have different personalities...and have a healthy respect for the animals". What about the danger of going out on a boat and knowing you may not make it back home? "That's the risk we take as filmmakers and obviously we know what we're getting into and it's just part of the job it's like going to work every day".

Brandon talked about how he's documented other dangerous predators for years but the scariest moment he's ever experienced in his career took place during the filming for "Shark Week". We ran footage of Brandon in a steel cage with a massive shark knocking it around and saw firsthand how things can go real wrong, real fast. "This scared the life out of me. My cage, I thought it wasn't holding up. He grabbed the buoy and snapped it and my cage started doing a 45 degree angle. That shark's 18 feet and over 3500 pounds. When that kind of weight hits the cage it feels like an SUV with teeth". You have to see this footage to fully understand just how close Brandon was to becoming lunch. When Maria asked him what happened to his body in that moment Brandon didn't miss a beat: "I had to change my wetsuit when I got back in the boat".
