LI street renamed after slain NYPD officer

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A new honor was given to a fallen member of the NYPD on what would have been his 49th birthday.

Officer Peter Figoski’s neighborhood now has a street named in his honor. Midwood Road in West Babylon, Long Island is where Officer Figoski lived, where he raised his daughters and not it’s where he is being honored.

The street was renamed in memory of Peter Figoski Way.

Figoski, a 22-year veteran of the NYPD, was fatally shot while responding to a botched robbery in Brooklyn in December 2011.

He left behind four daughters and a department still reeling from his loss.

“It’s tough, being a father of three daughters myself that no matter what great tributes we do to remember Pete and show what a great man he was, we can never bring him back,” said Chief Jeffrey Maddrey, 75th Precinct.

Figoski’s young daughters organized Saturday’s ceremony. Although Figoski spent his entire career in East Brooklyn’s 75th Precinct – he did his best work on Midwood Road as a father.

“He was a great father, great family man -- that’s who we are honoring here today,” said Steve Bellone, Suffolk County Executive

Figoski was posthumously promoted to detective and rewarded the NYPD’s Medal of Honor.

His family and friends say the title of “dad” was the one he was always most proud of.

“Today on what would have been 49th birthday we had one more assurance, that Detective Figoski’s legacy will not be forgotten,” said NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly.

Federal authorities say seven Long Island restaurants have agreed to pay nearly $1.7 million in back wages to 363 waiters and kitchen workers. The U.S. Labor Department says the restaurants - six in Suffolk and one in Nassau - were accused of paying workers below the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. They also were accused of paying employees off the books, failing to pay time and a half for overtime and other violations.
