Jury selection is underway for a former Phoenix Police officer charged with murder and animal cruelty.

Prosecutors say Richard Chrisman shot an unarmed man, Daniel Rodriguez, and his dog during a domestic dispute call in 2010.

It should take two days for attorneys to pick a jury. Opening arguments should start on Wednesday. This trial could last a month.

We still don't know if the jury will get to listen to the 911 call made by Daniel Rodriguez's mother in 2010.

Rodriguez's mother: "He is real violent and he's throwing things around the house and hurting my dog… he's just real violent. I'm afraid he's going to hurt me, he's hurt me before."

Thirty minutes after the call Phoenix Officer Richard Chrisman shot and killed Rodriguez. He says it was self-defense after Rodriguez reached for Chrisman's gun during a fight. His attorneys say the 911 call shows officers knew Rodriguez had a history of being violent.

But prosecutors say dispatchers listen to 911 calls, not officers. They don't want the jury to hear references to Rodriguez's violent acts. Chrisman's partner told investigators there were no threats being made against either officer when the shooting happened.

Mother: "Do you know what he threw out of the room? I don't know it was something sharp because it missed me and it hit the wall and the floor."

The judge will decide on that 911 call soon. He'll also decide whether the jury will be told about Chrisman's past disciplinary history. He was suspended for one day after this video surfaced of Chrisman planting a crack pipe on a homeless woman as a joke.

Chrisman was fired from the force. The state listed 28 potential witnesses. The defense listed 32 witnesses.
