PHOTOS: Chicago tall ships festival picks host for parade

Tall Ships Chicago has chosen singer-songwriter Tom Kastle to host the Parade of Sail on Wednesday. Fourteen ships will take part in the event, with opening ceremonies set for 2 p.m. at Navy Pier's East End Plaza.

Kastle will announce the ships as they parade past Navy Pier and return to dock. He'll also answer tall ship questions.

The schedule and route could change, depending on the weather.

Kastle is a tall ship captain who started his maritime career as a deckhand aboard the schooner Charlotte Ann in Burnham Harbor in the 1980s. He has captained Chicago's tall ships Windy, Windy II and Red Witch. He's also a founder and director of the Chicago Maritime Festival and faculty member of the Old Town School of Folk Music.

Tall Ships Chicago schedule:

Wednesday, August 7

Sail Away Cruises: 8 a.m. – 10:45 a.m.
75-minute Sail Away Cruises on select Tall Ships based on ticket availability.

Sail Away Cruise in the Parade of Sail • Departing at 1 p.m.
Four-hour sailing experience including a Ferris wheel ticket, box lunch, souvenir Tall Ships Passport book and parking pass (maximum of one per four purchased). All guests must board ships by 12:30 p.m.

Navy Pier's East End Plaza opens at Noon.

Chicago Match Cup: 12 p.m. – 2 p.m.
Teams begin first qualification round-robin to determine the top four. Four individual matches take place at once with each race lasting 15 minutes.

Parade of Sail: Begins at 2 p.m.
Ships will leave from Northerly Island and continue north to North Ave. before turning back south to arrive at Navy Pier. Click here for Parade of Sail route map.

Opening Ceremonies at Navy Pier's East End Plaza: 2 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Be there as the Tall Ships make their approach and dock.

Announcing of the Tall Ships: 2:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Announcing of the Tall Ships as they parade past Navy Pier and then return to dock.

Thursday, August 8

Advance or walk-up ticket purchase required. Box offices will open at least one hour in advance of festival opening.

Festival General Admission: 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.
View the Tall Ships up-close and walk the festival grounds, including the Chicago Match Cup.

Tall Ship Dockside Boarding: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Board and tour up to nine Tall Ships.

Sail Away Cruises: 9:30 a.m. – 8:45 p.m.
75 or 120-minute Sail Away Cruises on select Tall Ships based on ticket availability.

Chicago Match Cup: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Completion of first qualification round-robin determines the first four teams to advance to the quarter finals. At this point 69 individual matches have been sailed.

Grand Ballroom: 10 a.m. – 9 p.m.
Inside the North Dock festival grounds.
Featuring a glimpse into Chicago's maritime past plus nautical activities for kids including a radio-controlled sailboat pond.

Dockside Interpretation:  10:30 a.m. at Flagship Niagara
Dockside discussions with deaf interpretation available at Flagship Niagara.

Crew Welcome Walk • 11 a.m.
Crew members from each participating ship will gather at the entrance to Dock Street and walk east towards the entrance of the Tall Ships® Chicago 2013 festival grounds accompanied by a marching band and entertainment for all.

Dockside Interpretation: 11:30 a.m. at Unicorn
Dockside discussions with deaf interpretation available at STV Unicorn.

Match Cup Stage: 10 a.m. – 9:30 p.m. (Check signage at stage for schedule.)
Inside the North Dock festival grounds in the East End Plaza.
In addition to up-to-the-minute Match Cup racing commentary, live bands and DJs make the Match Cup Stage a hub of activity throughout the festival.

North Dock Stage: Noon – 8:30 (Check signage at stage for schedule.)

Live music ranging from a cappella sea shanties to modern country soul will entertain audiences of all ages.

Friday, August 9 – Saturday, August 10

Tall Ship Dockside Boarding: 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Board and tour up to nine Tall Ships.

Sail Away Cruises: 9 a.m. – 8:15 p.m.
75 or 120-minute Sail Away Cruises on select Tall Ships based on ticket availability.

Chicago Match Cup: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
On Friday is the completion of second qualification round-robin finalizes the second four teams to advance to the quarter finals. A best of five knock-out quarter finals turns the competition up a notch as it is now win or go home. Saturday is Semi-final day for the Chicago Match Cup. Again, a best of five knock-out series determines who will move onto the finals.
