Back To School Rules

Posted: Updated:

It's hard to believe summer vacation is already coming to an end for millions of school kids in Southern California but that's exactly what's happening. Today is the last full day of vacation for the Los Angeles Unified School District. Come tomorrow, schools throughout LA will be bustling with new and returning students, administrators, teachers and other staff.

The LAUSD has put out a parent/student handbook in five languages to help parents and students have a great school year. Although the rules and tips are specific to the LAUSD, I think many of them are applicable to every parent and student no matter which school district they're in.

There are five basic rules for parents:

  1. Learn about the emergency plan at your school in the unlikely event there is a crisis.
  2. Be aware of the required vaccinations for your child.
  3. Update your child's emergency contact card, noting any changes in cell, home or work phone numbers.
  4. Know your child's schedule every day. What time school starts and ends for your child. What time after-school activities end.
  5. Obey all traffic rules around your child's campus when you're dropping off or picking up a child from school.

The handbook also urges students to follow five basic rules:

  1. Know your school's rules and code of conduct.
  2. Walk to and from school with a buddy or group, going directly to and from school every day. Never make any unscheduled stops without your parents' knowledge and permission.
  3. Avoid talking to strangers or getting into a stranger's vehicle.
  4. Keep valuables, such as electronic devices at home.
  5. Report any dangerous or suspicious activity to a parent, teacher, police officer or other person of authority.

Let's face it. Accidents happen. Things can and will go wrong. But following these common sense rules and tips can keep the number of mishaps to a minimum and help guarantee a successful and safe school year.

I met the folks from Gunnar Optiks at CES this year and they had something new to show me. The Intercepts. I have a big head, these are big frames, it was kismet but do they work as good as they look? We'll see.
