LAUSD Students Start New School Year With Enhanced Security

Posted: Updated:

Picture a classroom, full of students.  It should be any other day in school, but suddenly, in the distance, you hear, gun shots, people screaming.. people dying.  What do you do?  In the past, an LAUSD teacher had one choice, lockdown.  But in this post Sandy Hook era, LAUSD has reviewed and refined it's lockdown policy.  Locking down the school is still the first choice, but the Chief of the LAUSD police recognized, it's not always the best choice.  A teacher or principal might have a better way to keep students safe.  That might mean moving the students out of the classroom and off campus, if necessary.  Chief Zipperman calls it, Rapid Relocation and it might make the difference between life and death.  In fact, he told me that in one class at Sandy Hook, there were fewer casualties because the students left the classroom and tried to run away.  They scattered, making it harder for the gunman to shoot them.

Meantime, the above scenario... all the LAUSD principals now know first hand what it would look like to have an active shooter on campus.  Last month, the LAUSD police conducted an active shooter drill  Police cadets served as students as an armed "bad guy" came onto campus and shot live but blank rounds.  This was an important lesson.  Some administrators admitted they'd never heard gunshots.  Now, they have.  And, now they have a better sense of what happens when the unthinkable happens.  And, if an active shooter comes onto campus, those administrators will have a better ability to determine whether to "lockdown" or "rapid relocate."

Tuesday is the first day of school for more than 660,000 LAUSD students.   They'll walk onto campus and see lots of uniformed school police, security aids and officers from LAPD and LASD.  By the way, that's the way every first day of school starts for the LAUSD.  But while students might SEE all those uniformed officers, they won't necessarily see the other aspects of the enhanced security, post Sandy Hook.  LAUSD has hired nearly all the 1,000 new promised  security aides that will be unarmed, but radio ready to report anything suspicious.

And, tell the bad guys, those security aides might be recognizable, but highly trained and armed LAUSD police officer just might be roaming on campus, but not in uniform, looking to protect the students, undercover.
