Approximately 10 percent of the world's population is left handed, and today is International Left Handers' Day.

Gatherings are taking place all over the world, according to the Left Handed Club.

The percentage of left-handed people in this world has stayed relatively constant throughout history, says scientists. According to the Left-Handers' Club, today serves as a day to celebrate being different and also a day to bring to light the frustrations that many left-handers experience in every day life, problems that include discrimination and even occasional injuries resulting from living in a right-hand dominated world.

According to a University of Dublin study, left-handed females, on average, make less money than right-handed females at the same job. Also, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, out of the more than 20,000 people amputated by tools and machines, a very high percentage are left handed people who are using right-handed equipment.

Being left handed was once considered puzzling and abnormal in many countries. A Popular Science article dated from 1918, tells American parents not to switch force their left-handed kids to become right-handed. Places in Asia still make left-handed children write with their right hands in school.

The human brain is split into two hemispheres. Due to what scientists call lateralization, one side of the brain controls the opposite side of the body. For left handed people, the right brain is more dominant. In brain scans, the right brain seems to show more activity when involved in creative and expressive tasks. In other words, right brain is more involved when reading emotions, listening to music and interpreting faces and images.

The Left Handers' Club was founded in 1990. International Left Handers' Day has been celebrated on August 13th since 1992.
