Consuming added sugar at recommended levels may be toxic to health

A sugar rush could be dangerous to more than your waistline, according to a new study from the University of Utah.

New research suggests that consuming added sugars, such as those found in candy, may prove toxic - even within the recommended dietary limits for humans.

Researchers found that male mice fed a diet with 25 percent extra sugar - equivalent to about an additional three cans of soda a day in humans - were less likely to defend their territory and reproduce.

Even more alarming-- the female mice on the same diet died at twice the normal rate.

The national research council recommends that people consume no more than 25 percent of their daily calories from added sugars -- and that's roughly the amount used in this study.
