Do you struggle to enjoy the moment because you're so worried about what might be going on elsewhere?
You have FOMO.
Fear of missing out may seem like just another catchy abbreviation from the kids-these-days who brought you "YOLO" (or "you only live once"), but doctors say advanced cases are nothing to LOL about.
"When they feel they're not stepping in place as all of their friends are on social media, then they really do get some fear," says Dr. Jeff Gardere. "They really do get some anxiety."
Humans have suffered from social anxieties forever, but just as it's done for every other facet of life social media has allowed FOMO to spread and intensify.
"It's like looking out your window and looking at a party, even though you don't really want to go out," said one man we spoke to.
A young woman told us: "I always have a fear of missing out on a good party or a fun weekend."
Tweeting, gramming, and Facebooking what you made for dinner or how your baby's appearance changed since three days ago may please or annoy your followers. But checking in with groups or posting pictures of a social engagement could leave them anxious and depressed.
"It really does become much more of a draw versus someone just giving you a phone call and saying: Hey, come on and hang out," Dr. Gardere says.
And for those who do attend every event, FOMOtakes its toll on their bank account.
"Socialization costs money," said a young social man. "So, yeah, absolutely."
So next time you find yourself thinking "My FOMO is ridiculous right now," Dr. Gardere has this advice: "Get your priorities straight. You can't do everything. You don't have the time for it. You have to get proper rest and you can't spend all your money."
