Jennifer Hudson hosts Hatch Day school supply giveaway in Chicago

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Grammy-winning singer, Oscar winner and Chicago native Jennifer Hudson is in town for a very good cause Wednesday, to give back to the community as students prepare for a new school year.

Hudson was at the Kroc Center of the Salvation Army to host Hatch Day, established with her sister, Julia, in memory of her 7-year-old nephew Julian King, who was murdered in 2008.

The public started lining up at 1250 W. 119th Street for the annual school supply event in the early morning hours, to make sure they get a chance to participate in the program. The line was full of students and their families, eager for a chance to meet their idol.

School supply distribution began at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Parents told FOX 32 News that they could not be more thankful to Hudson for taking the time to help out their kids, and giving their kids a great outlook for the coming school year by hosting this event.

Hudson and her sister Julia spoke live on Good Day Chicago with FOX entertainment reporter Bill Zwecker. She told him that she loves coming back to her hometown for this event every year, and there is, without a doubt, "no place like home."

Hudson also talked about the home where her mother and brother were murdered. She says she wants the house to be turned into a women's shelter-- hopefully by the end of the year.
