Swarthmore Man Loses Boa Constrictor

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -

"This is my baby," says Dr. David Spiegel.

Dr. David Spiegel's baby isn't your typical child. He's a 7 foot Boa Constrictor named Snakey.

"I like to set him on this limb and sometimes he'll hangout here," says Dr. Spiegel. "And sometimes he'll go up and down."

The 23-year-old snake vanished from the veterinarian's backyard in Swarthmore around 5, Sunday evening. He was last seen catching some sun in the shrubs near the AC-unit. It's one of his favorite hangouts.

"Most of the time he's laying there, we're checking on him. And this one time were checking on him, and he managed to wander off," says Spiegel.

"This is my Steve Irwin hat ... check as many bushes as I can. That's my plan," says Neighbor Do Haldeman. Neighbor Don Haldeman's no snake charmer, but he's hoping to help bring Snakey home to his daddy.

He's checking bushes in and around Snakey's Park Avenue address. He's also taken precautions at home.

"Four maincoon cats, they're in the house for now until the snake surfaces," he says.

Spiegel says his son's a docile, domesticated snake who loves pets and people. He has a picture of his daughters playing with Snakey when they were young. Snakey even gets along with the two family cats.

"Often times, if we get him rats and they're too big. he's intimidated," says Dr. Spiegel.

Recently two Canadian kids were killed when a Python escaped from a pet store.

"My heart goes out to that family," says Dr. Spiegel. Spiegel says he couldn't imagine his family-friendly pet doing something like that, especially since Boas are less aggressive than Pythons and constrict on small prey when they're hungry.

"I do not expect him to go hunting kids or babies or anything like that because he never has. He's grown up with kids," says Dr. Spiegel.

This isn't the first time Snakey's gotten away. He escaped about a year ago and was found a block away in a neighbors yard.

The chief of police says it's legal for people in Swarthmore to have exotic pets like Boa Constrictors. The Spiegel's are circulating a lost snake flyer, hoping it'll help bring Snakey home. If you happen to spot him, call Swarthmore police at 610.541.0805.
