Ballerina hopes to inspire children to follow their dreams

Precious Adams followed her love of ballet all the way to Moscow. Now after years of practice, she will be performing in her hometown.

"It will bring you alive. Your eyes will see something totally new, totally different," Adams said.

You can see how the 18-year-old just lights up when she talks about ballet. She spent the last two years studying the art at the prestigious Bolshoi Ballet Company in Moscow. Her training, however, began at the Academy of Russian Classical Ballet in Wixom.

"My job is to train students and to find that hidden jewel in them," said Sergey Rayevskiy. "She worked very hard. She was constantly rehearsing in the studio."

Adams is one of the handful of metro Detroit dancers that will be performing at the Detroit Opera House in the Stars of Russian Ballet gala performance.

"I'm trying to bring world class ballet stars into Detroit, and I'm trying to bring all the students into Detroit from all over the world," Rayevskiy said.

"The dancers are incredible. It's fresh. It's new," Adams said.

Being exposed to dancers like Adams could inspire Detroit's next generation of dancers and ballerinas.

"You never know where you might find your next great star," Rayevskiy said.

"We're all paving the way. We're all opening new doors. I hope that I'm inspiring more girls and boys and children who have dreams to go after them whether it be ballet or becoming a doctor," Adams said.

The Stars of Russian Ballet performance will be Saturday, August 17 at 7:30 p.m. The director is now offering free tickets to local nonprofits and charities.
