The family of a Philadelphia police officer wounded in a shooting earlier this week is expressing gratitude to the public as well as his police family.

Officer Edward Davies, 41, was shot inside a Feltonville mini-mart as he tried to help with the arrest of a driver who had fled from a traffic stop.

The married father of four was initially rushed to Temple University Hospital in critical condition, but his family says he has been upgraded to serious condition.

Police are calling the shooting suspect, 31-year-old Eric Torres, a career criminal. He's charged with attempted murder and 23 related counts.

Sources also tell FOX 29 News that Torres may be a suspect in a June murder case.

In Friday's statement, which was passed along by the department, Davies' family says they want to express thankfulness "to all of those who are sending good wishes, prayers and support to Ed and to our family at this very trying time.

"Ed is a wonderful father and husband and a dedicated police officer who loves his job," the family said. "We are heartened and strengthened by the actions of those who have come forward to donate blood. We would like to thank the members of the larger community, the members of the Philadelphia Police Department and the Fraternal Order of Police."

The statement continues, "We are especially thankful and cannot express enough the support we have received from Ed's fellow officers in the 25th Police District; they are truly an extension of our family. Ed remains in serious condition so we are focused on supporting him; and we ask for your continued prayers and support for Ed and all police officers."

The family is also asking for privacy during this time.

Police say one of Davies' colleagues raced him to the hospital in her squad car. She is being credited with saving the officer's life.

A two-day blood drive being held in Davies' honor continues Friday. Anyone wishing to donate can do so from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Red Cross' Philadelphia Donation Center, located at 700 Spring Garden St., or its Northeast Philadelphia Donor Center at 1401 Rhawn St.

And the Fraternal Order of Police has announced there will be a healing mass for Davies on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Christ the King Church, on Morrell Avenue and Chesterfield Road in Philadelphia.
