Jackie Robinson, Pee Wee Reese statue rededicated after racist vandalism

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The Jackie Robinson little league team from Jersey City, N.J., led a chant in the shadow of Jackie Robinson's statue outside MCU Park in Brooklyn on Monday. It was a fitting tribute for the man who stood for so much.

The statue of Pee Wee Reese putting his arm around Jackie Robinson during a Brooklyn Dodgers game in 1947 -- a pivotal moment in history --- was vandalized with racial and anti-Semitic slurs recently.

The granite base was cleansed of the hate. The statue was rededicated for what it symbolizes.

The vandal, or vandals, have still not been caught. Nonetheless, the statue continues to stand tall, and the message remains as loud and clear as the crack of the bat and roar of the crowd.

When you hear about a place that still sells records, located in a hip neighborhood in the borough of Brooklyn, you enter that store with certain expectations. One of them being: you hope the guy behind the counter talks about music the way Cory Fierman does."I think it's just like the most important thing to you," he says. "I don't know how to describe it. It's the most important thing to me.
